Dusk
Jessie Liao
Acrylic paint
In the lingering afterglow of the sunset, the street becomes tender and nostalgic. Peach and rose tones soften the sky while indigo shadows stretch across the pavement. The windows glow with soft light of the setting sun, and time slows. The textured frame curls around the scene and extends the piece, giving it both structure and whimsy. It reflects the day’s end, its memories, and the fleeting warmth of dusk.

When I Look At You
Isabella Higuera
Acrylic paint on wood
This piece explores the human brain by visualizing what happens when information is processed. Sparks dancing along neurons in a chaotic waltz of thought, this is what happens when one thinks of those they love, platonically, familiarly, and/or romantically. I used hand-cut stencils to make the shape of neurons, acrylic paint and markers to refine details, and a fork for texture. The underpainting was created using fingerprints. No brush used.

Inkjet printed images and acrylic paint on foam core, acrylic paint on fabric
As the story goes, Eve is tempted by the snake to eat from the Tree of Knowledge, leading to her and Adam’s banishment from paradise. Supposedly Eve’s curiosity screwed over all of humanity—and for centuries, women were viewed as her deficient, viceful descendents. To what extent is this still true? How are mythologies intertwined with our contemporary thinking? Does ambition still make a girl monstrous?

Cyanotype, washing soda, paraffin wax, candle dye, acrylic paint on canvas dropcloth
I humanize the monsters through nostalgic, childhood imagery of a playground. I used cyanotype to convey memory: it is a photographic process, but is subject to the irregularities of sun exposure and the manipulation of film. The same is true of memory. Over time, our perception of our own experiences shifts.
Clementine and Luciana
Adams Virginia
Black and white print of 6x4 camera image
I've loved photography for several years, though I had only used digital cameras. This is the first photograph I took using a 6x4 film camera and using this new medium, I was able to create a transparent image of my sister, Clementine, standing next to a fully opaque image of her friend, Luciana. Since discovering this technique, I've continued to experiment with it in other photographs, but this, my first one, is my favorite of these photographs.
A Father's Embrace
Sienna Binder
Black ball-point pen, wood
This piece embodies the peace and safety I feel when I am with my dad. The use of wood with a ballpoint pen is based on the unconventional artist Shizu Saldamando who inspired me to explore a new medium on a new surface. I chose to draw my first Halloween on wood with a black ball-point pen, versus blue. The idea of black and white was to portray this piece as if it were from a monochrome film years ago. The simplicity of black and white allows the emotion of the moment to take center stage, emphasizing the warmth and intimacy of a father’s embrace and the nostalgic tone of childhood memory.

Oil on canvas
In this piece, I explore the notion of a universal human condition: one that is transcendent of time, place, culture. Two vastly different worlds are depicted—21st century American teenagehood and 19th century East Asian Buddhism. Despite each figure embodying vastly different contexts, their expressions mirror each other. They are each subject to the same aspects of the human condition, and it is through these universal experiences that their environments are intertwined. Furthermore, the stretching of the subjects and placement of pattern moves the viewer's eye vertically across the canvas; ‘transcending’ each painting’s cultural minutiae and bringing light to a greater duality that is deeply intrinsic to humanity.

Acrylic paint, paint pens, resin, and spray paint on a surfboard
I'm an avid surfer and board repairer. I got this vintage board for free and restored it, and wanted to customize it with a traditional tattoo-inspired painting.
